LOSAP Program Update – October 2025

We’re excited to share an update on the Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP) for Iowa’s volunteer firefighters.

Last week, we spoke with the state agency overseeing the LOSAP program, and everything remains on schedule for the application process to open in December 2025. Departments will register through an online state portal, which will collect information similar to what was required during the IFA registration process.

What You’ll Need to Prepare

To ensure a smooth registration, please begin gathering the following information now:

  1. List of eligible firefighters based on your department’s criteria (time frame: January 1–December 31, 2025).

  2. Last four digits of each firefighter’s Social Security number and their years of service (for data collection only).

  3. Fire department contact information – typically the Fire Chief or another designated member (name, phone, and email).

  4. Fiscal agent contact information – name, phone, and email.

The fiscal agent must be from the city, county, township, or benefitted fire district as defined in Iowa Code 100B.21.

  5. Investment amount for each qualified member.

  6. Any additional details the state may request once the form is available.

Application Timeline

  • The portal will open in December and remain open for 60 days.

  • After you submit your department’s application, the state will review it.

  • Once approved, the state will issue a contract for your department to sign.

  • Payments are expected in February or March, and funds will be sent electronically to your fiscal agent for investment.

We will post another update as soon as the portal goes live, including a direct link and step-by-step instructions.
