Creston FD Participates in Vehicle Extrication Training

In July, the Creston Fire Department took part in hands-on vehicle extrication training. This training helps firefighters stay ready to safely take apart crashed vehicles and rescue people who are trapped inside. The training starts with checking for hazards and making sure the vehicle is stable so it does not move during the rescue. Firefighters disconnect the battery to lower the risk of fire and prevent airbags from going off by accident. Depending on where the patient is, glass is either broken away from them or taped before removal. “Peeling and peeking” means pulling off the inside plastic trim to find hidden gas inflators, airbag canisters, and seatbelt tensioners before any cutting begins. Only then does the work of using spreaders and cutters begin: popping doors and cutting door hinges to create an unobstructed work environment for first responders. Training was also conducted on cutting posts to make a full roof removal or a roof flap, leaving it partially attached. Earlier in July, firefighters utilized this type of training when a vehicle flipped onto its side on Hwy 34. They partially removed the roof to reach the injured driver.
